One Month Follow Up - Adoptions
CVAS sends a follow up letter after one month for every adoption of our residents. Staff and volunteers get so attached to the animals that enter our shelter, we love to see them finally find a home and be spoiled like they deserve! We know our community gets attached to the residents and love to hear their success stories, so please enjoy the background on some recent adoptions!
Ellis
Ellis was our XL boy and former Longest Cat Resident, also one of the most unique cats we've had - a male tortie! Ellis was definitely a special boy - he liked what he liked, and he let us know when he was done with us! Ellis was too smart to be living in the shelter, he would get so bored and frustrated in his kennel that he would act out - which is a common occurance with long term residents. Unfortunatly that also meant he was not very popular with adopters. He wasn't even on the schedule to go home - his parents came in just to look and fell in love with him! Even though it took Ellis nearly a year to find his fur-ever home, he eventually found the perfect fit!
Trooper
You all may remember the 12 dogs we had come in from a cruelty case Christmas 2023. These dogs grew up in a shed, tied up in stalls with no access to the outside or human contact. He may have had a rocky start at life, and even his first few weeks at the shelter, but now he's a completely different boy! He gets to run in the open fields and play with his new people as much as he wants - which is more than we could have hoped for! It may have taken months for him to find his fur-ever home, but the wait was worth it!
Keller
Keller came in with his 4 siblings and his parents on one of the hottest days in summer. All the puppies were put in a crate, soaked in their own urine and feces, and on the brink of heatstroke in the bed of a truck. This was definitely one of the worst cases we had seen in 2024. Staff worked tirelessly to rehabilitate these pups and get them ready for their foster homes.
We were so grateful that, once they were healed and posted, we had such an overwhelming response on them. So many members of our community ready and willing to take on this challenge! Imagine our surprise when Keller - partly blind and deaf from the result of his previous living conditions and heatstroke - was the first pup to find a home! His new fur-ever family is absolutley amazing, and staff can't believe that he's the same pup we nursed back to health! He's a completely different boy and finally being spoiled in a home like he's always deserved, but it seems like he'll never grow into those ears!
Second Chance Stories
CVAS has a special fund for animals who are needing a "Second Chance" at life - dedicated to those who come in in need of emergency medical treatment. Thank you to everyone who has donated, as every monetary donation - no matter the amount - can save a life! We want our amazing community to see all the good they have done for not only the residents here, but the shelter as a whole. Below are some of our recent brave boys and girls, and a look into all they have overcome!
Mocha - Up For Adoption!
Mocha was surrendered to the shelter along with her daughter when their owners could no longer care for them. When she arrived, Mocha was very underweight, very anemic, had a bad case of fleas, and had cherry eye in both eyes! She was not feeling well at all. Mocha was put on several small meals a day along with several supplements, she was treated for the fleas and bloodwork was done. It took several months for Mocha to regain her strength and to regenerate her red blood cells. Mocha then had surgery to correct her cherry eyes and to be spayed. When she was under for her spay, a mammary lump was removed and sent out for testing - it came back as a benign mass that was hormone driven.
Mocha has made great strides in her recovery and is now ready to find her loving forever home! Mocha can be shy at first with new people but with some treats she will be your best friend! Mocha did live with other dogs and did well with them. She does show interest in cats but can be distracted. Mocha will need someone with beagle experience and that knows that she will follow her nose!
Daisy - Up For Adoption!
Daisy had entered the shelter as a puppy - originally named Nugget. When she was adopted, her new family were going to put her into training to be a service dog! Unfortunately, she was returned to the shelter when she needed surgery on her CCL after injuring herself. Her family understandably could not afford it. Daisy was evaluated by a specialist veterinarian, and it was determined that Daisy needed a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy - or TPLO - surgery on not one, but both of her back legs! A foster home was found so that Daisy could have her surgeries and recover in a calm enviroment instead of at the shelter. Her foster home did a wonderful job over the past several months of recovery from 2 surgeries, making sure that she had the best of care to heal and get a lot of TLC. Daisy has now been fully recovered and ready to find her forever home! She is a super sweet girl that has been a trooper throughout her surgeries and recovery! Without this Second Chance fund in place, Daisy would not be here today, and we couldn't be more thankful!
Pokey - Adopted!
Pokey came to the shelter as a stray on April 23rd, 2021. When he first arrived, we could tell he was not feeling very well. We soon discovered the issue - Mr. Pokey had a terrible urinary infection and was partially blocked! The vet flushed his bladder, and he was put on pain meds immediately. Pokey recovered very well from his ordeal, and had remained on special urinary food for the duration of his stay with us. After months of waiting without any interest, staff decided that he would be moved to the back offices where our other permanent residents reside. We left Pokey up for adoption but we all made peace that Pokey would be staying with us for the rest of his life. Imagine our surprise when - on the day of our Christmas Open House - a miracle happened! His new mom came looking just for him, with plenty of experience with his health under her belt. Pokey's adoption was both a surprise and a blessing, and we couldn't be happier that one of our longest residents (3 1/2 years!) finally found his fur-ever home in time for the holidays!
