Volunteering with CVAS
Welcome to CVAS Volunteering!
We are looking for consistent volunteers for the shelter - people who can dedicate their time and are reliable with showing up and helping staff and animals alike!
We have ample 'op-purr-tunities' for everyone! From animal socializing to groundskeeper work, we always enjoy a helping hand in the care of our fuzzy residents! We rely heavily on our volunteers; with so many animals entering the shelter all the time, our staff are limited on what we can provide for every single animal and what needs done around the shelter. It takes a community to come together and rescue and rehabilitate abandoned pets, and we couldn't be happier to aid our volunteers in this journey!
When you are an approved volunteer, we ask you schedule your orientation day with the volunteer coordinator. This is when you will come in and go over what your tasks will be in your area of interest, and get a tour of the building. We do schedule our volunteers to come in - you can simply contact the volunteer coordinator and let her know what schedule works best for you and us. We do this because we want to ensure we have enough space and time for our adoption appointments - we prioritize adoptions as animals leaving the shelter is what we strive for.
If you cannot be consistent with your volunteering, or do not communicate with the volunteer coordinator, you will have your approved application removed and no longer be a volunteer with CVAS.
Attention:
The volunteer coordinator emails out all the volunteer information - for both online and paper submissions. Please check your spam folder if you have not received a response - if still nothing, please reach out to cvasoffice@cvas-pets.org
Meet Our Greeters!
We want to spotlight our amazing Greeters!
These ladies help keep the front office afloat by helping in not only welcoming people visiting the shelter, but helping office staff with paperwork - making copies, setting up adoption folders, preparing for events, and much more! We couldn't be more thankful to these ladies who come in faithfully and help where they can!
Volunteer 'Op-purr'-tunities
Dog Walking/Socializing
As a dog walker and socializer, you'll be providing much needed exercise, play, and general enrichment for our doggy residents! It benefits shelter dogs greatly by meeting new people other than the employees they see everyday, and getting to play out all that extra energy!
It can help them be more confident when meeting potential adopters, and show off the dogs true personality rather than the one developed from being in their kennels.
Times:
Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri - 11:00am to 5:00pm
Sat - 11:00am to 3:00pm
Cat Socializing
As a cat socializer, you'll be providing much needed enrichment and bonding time for our kitty residents! Unlike the dogs who go on rotations for potty breaks and playtime outside, our cats remain in their kennels. Cats more often than not are very shy in the shelter, and do not know how to receive the love they want so bad.
Kitten Season also hits hard every year, we have so many kittens born in the shelter -anything new that is not staff or volunteer in the room they were nursed in, can be terrifying. Our cat socializers are vital in the future adoptions of our kitty residents, and getting them confidant and prepared for all types of fur-ever homes!
Times:
Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri - 11:00am to 5:00pmSat - 11:00am to 3:00pm
Events
With events, you'll be able to assist other volunteers and staff with setting up tables, managing raffles and merchandise, and getting to experience the rewards of interacting with the community and raising money for all of our residents!
If you want to be a part of something super fun that benefits all the homeless animals in our shelter, then joining us for events is for you!
Visitor Greeter
Our Greeters have a very important job; they welcome everyone who visits the shelter! Greeters must be comfortable speaking with the general public and have a friendly, welcoming demeanor. Some of their general tasks are escorting visitors back to our adoption area, assisting with simple paperwork and organizing, and any preparations we may need for events. Greeters have their own personal email chain and schedule directly with the Volunteer Coordinator.
Times: Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri - 11:00am to 5:00pmSat - 11:00am to 3:00pm
Shelter Grounds
Volunteering to assist with the shelter grounds is hardwork, but it is very rewarding!
We typically have our volunteers help in the winter or summer months; laying down animal safe salt, placing markers in the snow, raking leaves, mowing, mulching, planting flowers, cleaning the fountain, etc.
Kennel Cleaning
As a kennel cleaner, you will be working with either cats or dogs - assisting the animal care technicians in their job of caring for the animals and preparing for open hours.
This consists of scrubbing down the kennels, filling food and water, mopping and sweeping the floors, and generally making the animals clean and comfortable and getting the shelter ready for the day!
Times:
Every day of the week - 7:00am to 11:00am
PetSmart
Volunteering at PetSmart, you would be assisting other volunteers in going in to clean the kennels of the cats we send there for possible adoption. Generally this includes cleaning, filling food and water bowls, and making sure each kitty is happy and healthy!
And if you are interested, in ssisting our adoption counselor with adoptions. You would coordinate with the counselor and meet potential adopters at PetSmart to show the kitty!
Petco
Volunteering at Petco, you would be assisting other volunteers in going in to clean the kennels of the cats we send there for possible adoption. Generally this includes cleaning, filling food and water bowls, and making sure each kitty is happy and healthy!
And if you are interested, assisting our adoption counselor with adoptions - you would coordinate with the counselor and meet potential adopters at Petco to show the kitty!
Thrift Store
Volunteering at our Thrift Store, you would help sort merchandise, stock shelves and keep our store tidy. You could also help customers with their purchases and decisions. This is a great alternative to help the shelter if you love animals, but have allergies or are afraid to come to the shelter for fear of taking too many home!
The thrift store helps generate much-needed income for our operating funds so we can take care of more animals.
If you're interested, please contact our thrift store at (717) 261-1996.
