Cat Socializing
How This Helps CVAS
Cats are emotional creatures, the shelter is a high stress environment. Your effort in socializing them helps cats adjust and get them emotionally ready to find their forever home
Goals
- Enrich and socialize cats - especially the ones more in need, to emotionally prepare them for meeting their future family
- Get as many cats you are comfortable with out of their kennel for the day
Responsibilities
- Learn about the cats and their needs to better help them in daily shelter life
- Assist staff in tracking cats health and behavior, and record any findings for the day
- Provide water or a clean space for the cat if needed
Positive Experience
As a Cat Socializer, you’ll provide essential enrichment and meaningful bonding time for our kitty residents. Unlike our dogs, who enjoy regular outdoor rotations, our cats spend much of their day in their kennels—so the time you share with them becomes truly special. Your visits offer them a chance to play, explore, and enjoy the gentle companionship they look forward to.
Kitten Season brings an abundance of new little personalities, and your presence helps each one grow more comfortable with human interaction. Whether you’re engaging a playful kitten, offering a cozy lap, or simply sitting quietly with a calm adult cat, you create moments that brighten their day and help them flourish.
Your involvement is a vital part of their journey toward adoption, helping them build confidence and form positive connections that prepare them for loving forever homes.

Growth &
Our cat volunteers play an essential role in nurturing the emotional well-being and confidence of our feline residents. While many cats thrive with gentle interaction, others are deeply affected by the shelter environment or their previous home life. Some prefer to stay tucked in their kennels, uncertain about leaving their safe space; others may not yet understand how to accept affection or be held. Helping these cats grow requires patience, consistency, and a willingness to meet them where they are.
There will be days filled with setbacks, quiet frustration, and trial and error as you learn what each cat needs. Progress may be slow, and trust can take time to build. But the moment you see a once-fearful cat peek out from their blanket, step out of their litter box hideaway, or lean in for their first gentle pet, every challenging moment becomes worthwhile.
Supporting each cat’s comfort and confidence is one of our highest priorities. As a Cat Socializer, you’ll receive guidance on the best practices for interacting with our more sensitive residents, ensuring they gain the skills and trust they need to thrive in a future home.
