Kennel Cleaning
How This Helps CVAS
One of the most important tasks the shelter has is keeping our residents clean, fed, and healthy. And that's exactly what this position ensures.
Goals
Cleaning is completed by 11:00AM for our cats and dogs, both is the adoption wing and isolation wing
Responsibilities
- Cleaning kennels as directed by staff
- Ensure the residents have everything needed for the day
- Clean and tidy floors, hallways, and bonding rooms
Contribution that Matters
As a Kennel Cleaner, you’ll work alongside our animal care technicians to support the daily well-being of either our cats or dogs. This role may not be the most glamorous part of shelter life, but it is one of the most meaningful—and the one most deeply appreciated by both staff and animals. Clean, comfortable kennels set the tone for an animal’s entire day, helping reduce stress, support health, and create a calm environment where they can thrive.
Your efforts—scrubbing kennels, refreshing food and water, sweeping, mopping, and ensuring every animal has a clean, welcoming space—make an immediate difference. Staff rely heavily on volunteers who step into this role, and animals benefit from your care from the moment they wake up. For many of our residents, a clean kennel isn’t just a task—it’s an act of kindness that shapes their quality of life.

Essential Work
Kennel Cleaning is one of the most critical tasks in the entire shelter. It affects every area of the building and sets the foundation for the day’s operations. Without dedicated help in the kennels each morning, staff must shift focus away from other important responsibilities—slowing down adoption preparation, medical care, and every other part of the shelter’s workflow. Simply put, this role keeps everything moving.
Volunteers learn the core routines of shelter care, gaining hands-on experience that is invaluable for anyone aspiring to enter the animal field—including future vet techs, humane officers, and animal welfare professionals. This is a true “foot in the door” opportunity that offers real-world exposure to the daily rhythms of animal care.
While the work is often physically demanding, it is also uniquely rewarding. Knowing you’ve helped create a healthy, clean environment for every animal in the building is a powerful way to make a lasting impact—one that supports the entire shelter from the ground up.
